amazing grace how sweet the sound
i sit in the back row of the left side of the church
that saved a wretch like me
my nan-nan sits to my left and she sings without a hymn book
i once was lost but now i’m found
i pick up the red hymn and hand it to her
was blind but now i see
she smiles down at me but doesn’t open the book
’twas grace that taught my heart to fear
i take the book from her
and grace my fears relieved
and turn to the correct page and place it in her hands
how precious did that grace appear
she takes the book from me
the hour i first believed
i jab my finger down on the page and mime reading the words
through many dangers, toils, and snares
she smiles down at me again and keeps singing
i have already come
her eyes lifted heavenward
’tis grace that brought me safe thus far
i jerk the book from her hands
and grace will lead me home
and slam it back into the holder on the back of the pew
when we’ve been here ten thousand years
i sit in the middle row of the left side of the church
bright, shining as the sun
the daughter of my sunday school teacher sits to my right
we’ve no less days to sing God’s praise
bobby calls for birthdays
than when we first begun
and i avoid my mom’s gaze as she sends my nan-nan up without my help
amazing grace how sweet the sound
she stumbles as she stands
that saved a wretch like me
she walks to her best friend
i once was lost but now i’m found
she zig zags back across the aisle to someone else
was blind but now i see
they guide her with kind words
