Jeshurun
—upright and righteous one—
the idealized name He gave His people;
the way He sees us clothed in Christ;
the way He foreshadows us,
anticipating that Final Day.
Too often, Jeshurun applies to me ironically,
running headlong into rebellion,
playing the ungrateful child,
like a son of Israel
–I am Israel!
Less often, there is truth to the name.
When we are in union with Him,
in unity with His people.
When we are assembled in our divinely appointed roles
and in the manifestation of His Spirit-given gifts,
celebrating His glorious reign.
Then—in that moment—Jeshurun becomes
A transcendent taste of our true reality.
In those times, a slight shift takes place,
moving us forward,
one degree of glory to the next,
shining like Moses,
and going back into the world,
hearts transformed a little more than before
into the image of Christ,
rebelling less,
showing more gratitude,
loving people (formerly unlovable to us)
—like He loves us.
At all times, He sees us as Jeshurun,
filling up our thirst as a flood on dry land,
pouring the gift of His Spirit on us
like trees beside rivers,
leaves unwithered in times of drought,
branches raised shouting,
“We are Yahweh’s!”
calling on Your covenant Name.
Our hands write it in cursive,
adding “We are Jeshurun!”
You indeed are God of Jeshurun!
–Ancient of Days, Son of Man,
riding across the heavens,
coming in the clouds,
dominion and glory over
all empires, nations, peoples, and tribes.
Every knee must bow
to Your everlasting dominion.
Your Kingdom,
never to be destroyed,
never to pass away.
And on that everlasting Final Day,
that affectionate name, Jeshurun,
–upright, righteous one–
will no longer be an ironic misnomer
or a sometimes-transcendent moniker
but a declaration
of Your transforming power
and Your covenant love
for Your people.
