The Wondrous Love of God

by Lea Emmett

Artist: Leon Devenice

Oh, what wonderous love is this?
That dares lay its gaze upon man
Upon such vile, rebellious hearts
A spectacle of dirt and grime
Of hand-made thrones that no longer stand erect
But have disintegrated under millennia of folly
His righteous anger simmers at the sight of calves
Whose gold has tarnished and peeled
Under every green tree

He sees that they are harassed and helpless
Ships in the dark without stars or compass as guides
Run aground by tidal waves of their own rebellion
His vessels a graveyard at the bottom of the deep

Moved to compassion
He weeps
He chooses to redeem her
His bride
For the sake of His holy name

Oh, to know such love!
That pursues the castaway
Reshaping the heart’s hull to beat for Him
For He stitches and hoists her sails
Draws the western wind to avert her path
Towards the horizon
Redirecting her gaze to the colors of the sunrise
He painted just for her
