The Gatekeeper

by Sampoorna Thammadi

Hold the door open
to all those who want to enter
Get rid of the doorbell
I want to hear some laughter.

Cut the grass
Curate the hall
Let the children come inside
None are to wait in line.

Get the fire burning
Prepare a banquet—hurry
The choicest ones arrive in jolly
Let there be dancing and singing
Let there be merry, lasting longer than
the sun’s morning glory.

Let the rehearsals begin
Prepare the robes
in every color there be
Light the candles
Get the carriages ready
Wait around every square
Announce there’s a wedding in the city.

Heed ye people
To wisdom’s call
Young and old alike
Rich and poor—
no difference to strike.

Come out of your humble dwellings
Come celebrate with the living
The master is always giving.

Let me purify you with empyrean fire
Let me prepare you, embrace the invite
I’ll present you bright and spotless
for the day has arrived.

Seamless are the gifts in-store
For all those who come and explore
The sublime corneal pleasure
will be your hearts splendor and
the day will be remembered forevermore.

You will be the center of my affections
I’ll greet you at the door
This is but a fleeting world
on the ebb, to eternity’s shore…

One response to “The Gatekeeper”

  1. This is a wonderful poem. I enjoy poems that take a passage from the Bible and say it in a different way, while remaining true to what the passages says.
