The cross and circle, which have been at odds,
are joined as one in Ireland. The cross
stands like a man and points outward four ways.
The circle floats: the world, the sky, the days,
the universe; it points no ways or all
ways, in as well as out. It’s the Great Wheel.
The cross also suggests a sword or knife;
the circle, as you know, the Ring of Life.
And the circle makes the cross’s heart
in Ireland; elsewhere, they’re kept apart.
The Christ figure in many of Ireland’s
churches is still alive and reaching out-
ward in a semicircle which, without
us, will stay incomplete. See how He stands
in stillness? It’s a stillness that’s a shout
to us to round Him out by joining hands.
