The Afternoon Before

by Kris Green

&&& A leaf flutters down resting before them. The man reaches for it feeling its fragility between his fingers.
&&& “What?” The woman asks.
&&& “A leaf has never fallen before.”
&&& “What does it mean?”
&&& A cold wind pushes against them. He looks at her, her nakedness before realizing his own. He can see the question in her eyes. He responds.
&&& “We need to hide.”

&&& The sun lowers. The fruit core on the ground already turns brown with rot. The skies grow in a hazy, beautiful array of vibrant living colors. They could not face the One.

&&& The bushes are uncomfortable. Leaves scratch when once they had been soft. The chest thumps with a heavy burden never felt before. Is this death? Why does it feel so horrible. Blame rises in the heart of the man. It was her fault. They lock eyes, but he can’t say it. Something else comes out.
&&& “Can I worship you?”

&&& The woman shivers wrapping her arms around her chest. Why does he not act? All he wants to do is run and hide. It’s cold. Will they now live here in hiding? Why does he not defend me? Why did he not stop me? They lock eyes, but she can’t accuse him.
&&& “Can I worship you?”

&&& Thundering from beyond the bushes, they hear the One coming. The noises that once brought joy now only bring heartache.
&&&“Where are you?”
